En este ensayo que es también una novela extraordinaria, el historiador revolucionario Jules Michelet (1798-1874) desentierra de los archivos la historia de la persecución más letal que se haya llevado a cabo en Occidente contra las mujeres: la caza de brujas que entre los siglos XV y XVII condenó a decenas de miles de mujeres a la hoguera y que trató de erradicar una sabiduría pacientemente cultivada por ellas a lo largo de la Edad Media. Michelet entreteje su historia a partir de crónicas, actas judiciales y documentos de archivo, en el límite de la historiografía y la literatura, en lo que se ha considerado la primera obra de etnografía moderna y que constituye una denuncia visionaria de la violencia inquisitorial y patriarcal que fundó la Modernidad europea.
