Lady Chatterley's Lover : The Uncensored Edition

This novel by D. H. Lawrence was first published in 1928 and subsequently banned. Lady Chatterley's Lover is one of the most subversive novels in English Literature. The story concerns a young married woman, the former Constance Reid (Lady Chatterley), whose upper class husband, Sir Clifford Chatterley, described as a handsome, well-built man, has been paralysed from the waist down due to a Great War injury. In addition to Clifford's physical limitations, his emotional neglect of Constance forces distance between the couple. Her emotional frustration leads her into an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. The class difference between the couple highlights a major motif of the novel which is the unfair dominance of intellectuals over the working class. The novel is about Constance's realization that she cannot live with the mind alone; she must also be alive physically. This realization stems from a heightened sexual experience Constance has only felt with Mellors, suggesting that love can only happen with the element of the body, not the mind.

David Herbert Lawrence, D.H. Lawrence, född 11 september 1885 i Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, död 2 mars 1930 i Vence, Alpes-Maritimes, Provence, Frankrike, var en brittisk författare och poet. Fadern var gruvarbetare och modern kom från medelklassen. Lawrence försörjde sig som folkskollärare innan han blev författare. Han gifte sig 1914 med Frieda Weekley, född Frieda von Richthofen (avlägsen släkting till Manfred von Richthofen, "Röde Baronen"). Lawrence författarskap uttrycker hans av Freud påverkade primitivistiska livsfilosofi, kritik av överklassens intellektualism, karriärsmedvetenhet och civilisation, och sin samtids urbanisering och industrialisering. Han utgår från sin teori om den mänskliga naturen, särskilt den fria sexualiteten, när han i romanerna skildrar kvinnlig frigörelse i motsättning till de av samhället skapade rollerna, som utgår från socialklass, bildning, ekonomi och kön. Lawrences mest berömda roman är Lady Chatterleys älskare (1928), som på grund av sina erotiska skildringar och laddade språk inte kunde publiceras i Storbritannien förrän efter ett domslut 1960.
