More complex and sad than I expected and I even had to pause a little from it at one point. I like the book as a whole but I deeply dislike Maurice as a character. I cringe at most things he says and does. Most other characters are interesting and you want to know them but I don't know about how I will feel about getting through the whole series if it keeps being this sad, I mostly read detective stories for diversion and rest.
