A bear cub and a pup, orphaned the same week, take up together in the northern forest — and a man and a woman are running from the Mounted Police through the same country. Curwood was expelled from school, sold his first story at sixteen, and was paid by the Canadian government to travel the far north; he later gave up hunting entirely, and Neewa and Miki are why. Fifty-seven plates, among them Tom Thomson's Northern River and The West Wind, carry the same wild northern light that falls on Neewa and Miki.
