Började lovande. Irving målar upp välbekanta miljöer och placerar ut ett antal intressanta karaktärer. Dock fortsätter boken som en enda lång, svepande inledning utan att någon av karaktärerna får liv. Inga av karaktärerna talar med varandra på ett normalt sätt utan pratar bara om varandra och om händelser på ett sätt som förutsätter att läsaren har lärt känna människorna i berättelsen, trots att det motsatta är fallet. Varför Esther skulle välja att föda ett barn och överlämna det till sin yngre fostersyster är obegripligt. Den enda förklaringen är att den yngre systern inte vill ha en penis i sin vagina och inte heller vill föda ut något ur sin vagina. Efter dryga hundra sidor av svepande beskrivningar av Esthers livsval ledsnade jag.
