Spells of Breath and Blade

I spent my whole life believing magick was a curse—and that I didn't have enough of it to worry about, anyway.

Turns out I was wrong on both counts. I'm so much more than a magick-blessed Academy student. I'm an Arcana Witch, bound to a sacred order whose sole duty is to protect magick—and one another—at all costs. Thankfully, I'm not alone.

My Arcana magick brought four fiercely loyal, impossibly sexy Arcana mages into my life. But it also brought trouble. Corrupt Academy officials. Mysterious attacks stripping students of their power. And the terrifying Dark Arcana—five insanely powerful ancient beings desperate to reclaim the magick they believe is their sole birthright . . . and destroy the rest of us.

Our best shot at defeating them is to track down the hidden Arcana artifacts—sacred Tarot relics that bind and balance all magick. But to do that, we'll have to embark on a dangerous otherworldly journey—one that will change us in ways even the Tarot can't predict.

Surviving my first month at Arcana Academy was no easy feat, but compared to what's coming? That was training day.

This is the real deal. And the fight is just beginning.

Just a heads up… I really tried to force myself through this series. I really did. Almost at the end of book three and I just can’t do anymore. Sure the idea of the whole tarot plot thing and the evil bastards being searched for and all that jazz sounds alluring, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. It feels like the main mystery isn’t the focus but more a means to and end. Meaning: the book is about ”why choose” sexy times and the mystery part is shoehorned in to fluff up the story and trying to make it pass as something else. I’d wished it’d have been the other way around. Spice is nice but I feel it’s called spice for a reason. As in you don’t make it the main part of the dish but sprinkle some on top to elevate the meal. Also the male narrator is waaaay to over dramatic for my taste. He kind of make all the characters feel teenage girl whiny and emo. I can’t help but to think about an interview with Emma Thompson and her received advice about how to make relatable characters that don’t feel over the top dramatic. The advice was ”don’t cry and don’t sigh”, well in this case all the sighing and moaning made me hate almost every character when portrayed by the male narrator. I’ve listened to him before and usually I don’t feel it’s this bad but this time it was almost painful. Female narrator is rally good though. Wouldn’t recommend..
