Helen Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English author, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist best known for her imaginative children's books, featuring animals such as those in The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which celebrated the British landscape and country life.
Potter published over 23 books: the best known are those written between 1902 and 1922. She died of pneumonia and heart disease on 22 December in 1943 at age 77, leaving almost all her property to the National Trust. She is credited with preserving much of the land that now comprises the Lake District National Park.
Potter's books continue to sell throughout the world, in many languages. Her stories have been retold in song, film, ballet and animation.

Helen Beatrix Potter föddes 28 juli 1866 i South Kensington i London, hon dog 22 december 1943 i Sawrey i Cumbria. Hon var en brittisk barnboksförfattare och illustratör.
På somrarna reste hon med sin familj till Skottland eller Sjödistriktet, där Beatrix tecknade djur och växter. Hon tecknade även av sina sällskapsdjur, till exempel kaniner. När ett av hennes vänners barn, den femårige Noel, blev liggande sjuk i flera månader skickade Beatrix tecknade sagor i brev till honom; bland annat om Pelle Kanin. Åtta år efteråt frågade hon efter brevet och det fanns bevarat. Beatrix kopierade bilderna, lade till några nya och gjorde en bok. Inget förlag ville ge ut den och därför gav hon ut den på egen bekostnad, i litet format. Boken utkom 1901 och blev en sådan framgång att barnboksförlaget Frederick Warne & Co nu ville ge ut den; dock var detta mer en idé om att få deras leukemisjuka bror Norman i arbete för en tid.
Potters egna föräldrar tyckte dock att hon ägnade sig för mycket åt att skapa sina böcker i stället för att sköta hushållet åt dem och att hon tillbringade för mycket tid med brodern och hans familj. När hon skulle besöka förläggarens brorsdotter för att teckna av hennes dockskåp för en av sina böcker, förbjöd Beatrix föräldrar detta. Beatrix var då 38 år. När hon senare ville förlova sig med Norman Warne vägrade föräldrarna att ge sitt samtycke, men hon förlovade sig trots detta med honom. Dock avled Norman Warne av leukemin sommaren 1905, endast två månader innan bröllopet skulle äga rum.
För en del av inkomsten från sina böcker köpte Beatrix Potter bondgården, "Hill Top Farm", nära byn Sawney i Sjödistriktet. Där mötte hon sin barndomsvän William Heelis, när hon några år senare köpte "Castle Farm". Vid 47 års ålder gifte hon sig med barndomsvännen William, dock emot moderns godkännande. De bosatte sig på en fårfarm nära Sawney i England, där hon tillbringade de resterande trettio åren av sitt liv med att illustrera flera barnböcker och samtidigt driva flera farmer tillsammans med sin make William. William och Beatrix levde lyckliga tillsammans tills hon dog den 22 december 1943. Hon var då 77 år gammal.
Potter testamenterade sina ägor, inklusive de farmer hon köpt under sitt liv, till The National Trust i England. Anledningen var att hon ville bevara landsbygden och bondgårdarnas naturliga skönhet i befintligt skick även efter sin död. Idag är dessa ställen öppna för allmänheten att besöka.
Potter skrev tjugotre böcker mellan 1902 och 1930. Till många av sina berättelser om djur, exempelvis Peter Rabbit, hämtade hon inspiration från det natursköna Sjödistriktet Lake District i nordvästra England.
Åren 1992-1995 visades animerade serier världen över, baserade på karaktärer ur Beatrix Potters omtyckta barnböcker.
En långfilm baserad på hennes liv, "Miss Potter", producerades 2006 med Rene Zellweger i rollen som Beatrix.
