Years before the play begins, Prospero was overthrown by his brother Antonio, with the help of Alonso, the King of Naples. Prospero and his young daughter, Miranda, were set adrift at sea and ended up on a remote island. On the island, Prospero masters magic, enslaves the monstrous Caliban (the island's native inhabitant), and rescues a spirit named Ariel, who becomes his magical servant.
