A king carries a corpse on his back through the burning-ground, and the vampire in it tells him a riddle-story every night. Burton translated the Sanskrit cycle and added footnotes of his own that are half the entertainment; it is the source of a great deal of later frame-story fiction. This edition binds 29 plates of Indian painting with the text, among them works by Sahib Ram, Nainsukh and Edwin Lord Weeks, alongside 31 illustrations restored and coloured for this volume.
