The novel begins with the description of the boring and restrained life of a middle manager at a brokerage firm, then quite unexpectedly the police come to his home to arrest him for helping embezzle 12 million francs. He eludes the police, then the narrative has no less than four separate flashbacks that explore the lives of the man's wife, their daughter, their son, and their son's mistress.
