Poirot viaja en un crucero por el Mediterráneo. Cuando la mayoría de los pasajeros desembarca en Alejandría, la millonaria señora Clapperton aparece muerta en su camarote, aparentemente apuñalada por uno de los mercaderes nativos. Aunque nadie simpatizaba con la señora, el único con un verdadero motivo es su marido, pero tiene una sólida coartada. Poirot utilizará su método y muy pronto descubrirá al asesino.
