Lost in Transnation : Towards an Intercultural Dimension on Campus

To increasing extent international students take part in university campus-life. The diversity that these students bring provides many benefits but also potential challenges for institutions of higher education. The differences in values, norms and behaviors become apparent in various ways through communication styles, learning beliefs or work styles. International, lecturers, officers and international students find themselves frequently confronted with questions, misunderstandings and failures What may be a basic for scholarly work in one culture (e.g. independent reflection, creativity, analytical approach), could be of second rank in another culture.

This forces us to leave one-way roads and focus on intercultural processes of development in teaching, learning and researching, in order to reach a new level of quality on campus.

What is special about this book is the discussion of these issues in a multicultural cultural setting. Scholarly perspectives from China, India, Africa, the Americas and Germany are parts of the tapestry. They share their theoretical insides and practical experiences and perspectives for successful academic integration of international students.

We need to learn how to live together. We need to teach each other how to share life. We need to develop a deeper understanding for otherness.
