Thomas Manns mesterværk Trolddomsbjerget indledes ti år inden Første Verdenskrig. Den 24-årige Hans Castorp besøger sin tuberkuloseramte fætter Joachim Ziemßen på et sanatorium i Schweiz. Det er planen, at Castorp skal være på besøg i tre uger, men under sit besøg bliver hans eget helbred stadig dårligere, og afrejsen bliver hele tiden udsat. På sanatoriet møder Castorp en række mennesker, som på hver deres måde tegner et billede af de diskussioner, der præger Europa før Første Verdenskrig.
