In 1940, best friends Lili and Esti reside in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. Their bond deepens as Esti becomes a mother to her son, Theo. However, the onset of war and the enforcement of Mussolini’s Racial Laws, which label them as part of an 'inferior' Jewish race, shatter their peaceful existence. When Germany invades northern Italy, the friends find themselves in occupied territory. Faced with escalating dangers, Lili embarks on a perilous journey southward toward Allied territory, traversing Nazi-occupied villages and bombed-out cities, all while striving to protect young Theo. This narrative highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the profound bonds that sustain individuals through adversity.
