Richard Blackburn and his mother used to live in Maryland until Richard's father died. Now they live on a plantation in Virginia with Richard's grandfather. Richard's grandfather owns slaves, and Richard believes that having slaves is wrong. Richard and his grandfather have conflicting views about slavery until something happens that changes his grandfather's mind.
