Mario och trollkarlen

Efter att Hitler tagit makten 1933 lämnade Thomas Mann Tyskland för ett liv i exil och han var tidigt en av de främsta kritikerna av den framväxande fascismen och nazismen. Helt öppen i sin kritik är Mann i ”Mario och trollkarlen”, där trollkonstnären Cipolla tecknas efter den italienske diktatorn Mussolini och i analogi med samtiden förmår inte publiken förstå ”var spektaklet slutade och katastrofen började, och man lät dem bli kvar i den lyckliga villfarelsen att alltsammans hade varit teater.”
