âOn Picket Duty, and other talesâ is a collection of four short stories that focus on a range of social issues that were raging in America in the nineteenth century. The tales tackle issues near and dear to Alcottâs heart, mainly that of womenâs rights and Abolition. They are profound reading, representing a much more serious artistic creation from Alcott which is reflective and uplifting, and at times dark and gloomy with the tale of âThe Death of Johnâ. Ultimately it a profound piece of work that charts Alcottâs continuing fight to represent social issues in industrial America. Have the tissues ready for this one. Donât say we didnât warn you.
