Los temas de estas doce nuevas aventuras, recopiladas bajo el título de La memorias de Sherlock Holmes en 1894 son variados: "La Gloria Scott", "El jorobado" y "El paciente interno" tratan de dilucidar crímenes ocurridos en el pasado; El tratado naval es una historia de espionaje; Los hacendados de Reigate y El intérprete griego nos hablan de la avaricia; o El oficinista del corredor de bolsa, que trata de un timo cometido por motivos inconfesables. Conan Doyle, autor de muchas otras grandes obras, veía eclipsada el resto de su labor literaria por su gran detective, así que tomó una decisión absolutamente radical: Sherlock Holmes iba a morir, y de este modo, podría concentrarse en el tipo de libros que de verdad prefería escribir. Sería en el último de los relatos de estas Memorias titulado El problema final, donde tomaría esta decisión de la que pronto tendría que arrepentirse.
