âIan?â I gasped.
âWelcome to New York City, baby girl,â he was beaming, standing in front of me with a big bouquet of flowers.
My vision was instantly blurry. I couldnât believe what I was seeing. My hands went to cover my quivering mouth, dropping everything I was holding in my hands.
âYouâre real,â I sobbed.
âOf course, I am,â he chuckled.
âI thought youâre gonna wait at the Airbnb?â
âYouâre not the only one that likes surprise appearances,â he laughed and I laughed at that too.

âI just wanna be someone you can be proud of,â
He looked defeated.
âYouâre a smart girl, youâre gonna go places. I wanna be a man that deserves a girl like you. I donât wanna just be some teacher at some high school.â
My hands reached for his tired face and I cupped his cheeks gently. He tried to look away, but I forced his eyes to look into mine.
âIâm always proud of you, Ian. Even before the gallery and even when youâre just my teacher, I am always proud of you.â
