De 199 trin er, hvad der er, op til kirkegården på Whitby klostret i Yorkshire, hvor den 34-årige arkæolog Sian arbejder med udgravninger. Hun har længe været hjemsøgt af uhyggelige drømme, men her bliver det værre, og nat efter nat bliver hun i mareridt først forført og derefter myrdet. Da hun på kirkegården møder den smukke studerende Mack, som viser hende en 300 år gammel papirrulle, får hun endelig andre ting at tænke på: Den gådefulde tekst på rullen skal tydes, og den unge Macks interesse skal holdes fanget.
