Kongelig Højhed

Kongelig Højhed er Thomas Manns anden roman, og har herhjemme stået i skyggen af Manns andre store værker Buddenbrooks, Trolddomsbjerget og Døden i Venedig. Det er første gang, at historien om Klaus Heinrich, der vokser op og bliver Hans Kongelige Højhed, forelægger i en ren dansk oversættelse.

Det er histoien om residensbyen Grimmsburg der på tærsklen til det tyvende århundrede kæmper med et omfattende forfald. Jernbanen er urentabel, administrationen gammeldags og universitetet provinsielt. I midten af dette forfald, befinder Storhertugen Prins Albrecht sig, fortvivlet over, at den eneste arving er svagelig, og at næste barn i arvefølgen, Klaus Heinrich, er født med et handicap. Men på trods af sin forkrøblede venstre arm, overtager Klaus Heinrich hertugens forpligtigelser. Kongelig højhed udvikler sig til en kærlighedshistorie, da Klaus Heinrich møder Imma Spoelmann, datter af en amerikansk stålmagnat. Fortællingen om det lille forfaldsramte samfund, ender derfor med en mulig alliance mellem den gamle slidte adel, og den nye borgerlige overklasse.
