Sortehavet var i antikken mødested for flere forskellige kulturer. I steppelandet nord for Sortehavet boede skythiske nomade-stammer, langs hele kyststrækningen anlagde grækerne kolonier, og i sydøst gjorde Persien sin indflydelse gældende. I dette klude-tæppe af kulturpåvirkninger tog vante religiøse forestillinger nye former, når de skulle tilpasses lokale forhold. Fem antikforskere behandler i denne bog forskellige aspekter af det religiøse liv, som udspillede sig ved Sortehavets kyster.
