A Tangled Tale Lewis Carroll - A Tangled Tale is a collection of 10 brief humorous stories by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), published serially between April 1880 and March 1885 in The Monthly Packet magazine. Arthur B. Frost added illustrations when the series was printed in book form. The stories, or Knots as Carroll calls them, present mathematical problems. In a later issue, Carroll gives the solution to a Knot and discusses readers' answers. The mathematical interpretations of the Knots are not always straightforward. The ribbing of readers answering wrongly giving their names was not always well received (see Knot VI below).In the December 1885 book preface Carroll writes:The writer's intention was to embody in each Knot (like medicine so dexterously, but ineffectually, concealed in the jam of our early childhood) one or more mathematical questions in Arithmetic, Algebra, or Geometry, as the case might be for the amusement, and possible edification, of the fair readers of that magazine.Describing why he was ending the series, Carroll writes to his readers that the Knots were "but a lame attempt". Others were more receptive: In 1888 Stuart Dodgson Collingwood wrote "With some people, this is the most popular of all his books; it is certainly the most successful attempt he ever made to combine mathematics and humour." They have more recently been described as having "all the charm and wit of his better-known works".

Lewis Carroll (pseudoniem voor Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) is geboren op 27 januari 1832 in het Engelse plaatsje Daresbury. Na zijn studie wiskunde begint hij met lesgeven op de school Christ Church. Zijn eerste publicaties in 1860 en 1861 zijn dan ook van een puur wiskundige aard. In 1856 raakt Dodgson bevriend met Henry Liddell. Henry heeft een vrouw en drie dochters. Dodge gaat vaak met deze drie dochters, Ina, Alice en Edith, picknicken. Hij vertelt dan leuke verhalen. De zevenjarige Alice Liddell moedigt hem aan om de verhalen op te schrijven. Dodgson doet dit en geeft het haar cadeau, compleet met door hem gemaakte illustraties. In 1865, onder het pseudoniem Lewis Carroll, publiceert hij het manuscript met als de titel De avonturen van Alice in Wonderland. Dit boek, over de fantasie en humor van kinderen, is onmiddellijk een succes en vanaf dit moment is de naam Lewis Carroll een fenomeen. In 1871 verscheen het vervolg: Through The Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. In de vertaling van Nicolaas Matsier verscheen dit boek onder de titel Achter de spiegel en wat Alice daar aantrof. Dodgson schrijft na zijn meesterwerk De avonturen van Alice in Wonderland nog andere boeken. Ondanks zijn succes blijft hij lesgeven op Christ Church. Op 14 januari 1898 overlijdt Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, zijn werk is dan over de hele wereld bekend.
