Arthur Machen, born March 3, 1863, in Caerleon, Monmouthshire, Wales, The United Kingdom, was a leading author of the 1890s. He is best known for his influential supernatural, fantasy, and horror fiction. "The Great God Pan," published in 1894 made him famous and controversial in his lifetime. Machen's story was widely denounced for its sexual and horrific content and subsequently sold well, going into a second edition. His other fiction, novels and short stories written between the late 1880s and the 1930s, frequently sound notes of the fantastic and the surreal. Machen was a man who was at war with the stifling scientific materialism which was the dominant world-view of his time, and this is echoed in his non-fiction works, which include literary criticism, cultural history, and spiritual polemic, all of which justify his memory as 'the apostle of wonder'. He passed from the world of shadows on December 15, 1947. Narrator Edward E. French is an Oscar nominated Hollywood Makeup Effects Artist (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) and Emmy Award Winner for The Westworld reboot, Mad TV and Fox TV’s House.
