I really enjoyed the two earlier books in the series and love the premise. Mystery books being lead by female friendship of a certain age with three different life circumstances are so rare. Sprinkled with wit and a north English landscape and village life description. This book is darker and more bleak. The comradery and the friendship driven mystery solving is less present. Seriousness and a underlaying sadness is more prominent. It’s a good listen, but I am hoping that the next book lets a bit of sunshine and humour back in. This book is closing in on noir and leaving cosy mystery. One not being more worthy than the other. But the volume of crime noir is massive, let there be room for female led mysteries that shamelessly accepts lightheartedness as literary quality.
