Yeongdo, Korea - 1911. In a small fishing village on the banks of the East Sea, a club-footed, cleft-lipped man marries a fifteen-year-old girl. The couple have one child: their beloved daughter Sunja. When Sunja falls pregnant by a married yakuza, the family face ruin. But then, Isak, a Christian minister, offers her a chance of salvation: a new life in Japan as his wife. Following a man she barely knows to a hostile country in which she has no friends, no home, and whose language she cannot speak, Sunja's salvation is just the beginning of her story.

3.75 Such an interesting story. I love books that move through different timelines and POVs, and I really enjoyed learning more about Korea/ Japan history and culture. I reeeally loved the first half. The second half introduced a lot of characters, and while they were well written, it sometimes felt like there wasn’t enough time to fully connect with them emotionally. I get why it was necessary for the bigger picture though. The ending felt a bit abrupt to me.

Beautiful, gripping story of four generations trying to find settlement in Japan but struggling with a sense of belonging that never really lives up to the expectations.
