On a rainy July night, Sir William Ponson, a wealthy country squire, disappears from the riverside boathouse at his Luce Manor estate. His boat is found drifting below the weir, his body nowhere to be found. Inspector Tanner of Scotland Yard arrives to investigate, and quickly uncovers a web of secrets: a forged love letter, false footprints on the Abbey grounds, a hidden blackmail plot reaching back decades, and a long-lost relative who has come to claim his share of the family fortune. As Tanner chases clues from the quiet Oxfordshire countryside all the way to a steamship bound for Lisbon, he must untangle a web of family lies, hidden marriage, and cold calculation to discover what really happened on that fateful night at the boathouse. A classic Golden Age detective novel by Freeman Wills Crofts, the master of meticulous police procedurals.
