Tarzan and his wife are lured aboard a yacht, and their infant son is carried off by the Russian who has hated the ape-man since Paris. Marooned on an island of the African coast, Tarzan gathers an army out of what he finds there: a tribe of great apes, a black warrior he spares, and the panther Sheeta. Burroughs wrote it in 1913, when the first Tarzan story had already made him famous. The chase runs down a river and back through the jungle, and the ape-man does the arithmetic of revenge in silence. Fifty-one plates of harbour and dockyard painting by Turner, Grimshaw and others give the marooning and the river chase their true element.
