Henry James counted The Pupil among his finest tales. A poor young tutor is engaged by a shabby-genteel family perpetually drifting through the hotels of Europe, and discovers that his pupil — a frail, precocious boy — is the cleverest person in the household and the only one ashamed of what the others are. The boy's education is learning exactly what his parents are; the tutor's is discovering what he himself will not do. This edition presents the complete and unabridged novella, newly typeset and illustrated with 30 full-page color plates, Sargent among them.
