Thirty-three tales gathered from half the world: the hero Makoma and the magic mirror from the Senna country, the Rover of the Plain from the Ba-Ronga of Mozambique, jackal stories from the Berbers of North Africa, Pathan tales told to a British officer on the Indian frontier, Lapland stories of the Stalos, Scandinavian tales from Thorpe, Spanish ones from Fernán Caballero, and Andersen's Ugly Duckling. The orange book was the tenth of Lang's coloured series and leans harder on ethnographers' fieldwork than the early ones; the African stories keep the shape their tellers gave them. Its 53 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
