Discovery of Ancient Egypt: History, Archaeology & Ancient Texts gathers historical survey, archaeological interpretation, travel-inflected description, and textual scholarship into a capacious account of Egypt's rediscovery in modern learning. Its range moves from dynastic history and monumental remains to inscriptions, religious literature, and the material conditions of excavation. Rather than presenting antiquity as static spectacle, the volume illuminates the changing evidentiary practices through which temples, tombs, papyri, and royal narratives became legible to wider audiences. The collection brings together Arthur Gilman, George Rawlinson, Gaston Maspero, Agnes Sophia Griffith Johns, and E. A. Wallis Budge, writers and scholars associated with nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Egyptology and the popularization of ancient history. Their distinct approaches reflect the period's convergence of philology, museum culture, imperial travel, archaeological fieldwork, and comparative historical inquiry. Read together, these voices reveal both the formative achievements and the interpretive assumptions of modern Egyptological scholarship, enriching the reader's sense of how ancient Egypt was constructed as an object of study. This volume is especially rewarding for readers seeking multiple entrances into Egyptian civilization and the history of its study. It offers valuable context for students, historians, and general readers alike, while fostering a productive dialogue between artifacts, texts, and the scholars who interpreted them.
