Le roman croise les destins de Caroline Helstone, jeune femme réservée entravée par les conventions, et de Shirley Keeldar, héritière indépendante dont l'autorité défie les modèles féminins traditionnels, autour des frères Robert et Louis Moore. Charlotte Brontë y associe réalisme social, analyse psychologique, satire des hiérarchies de classe et réminiscences romantiques ou gothiques. La narration, ample et polyphonique, observe avec ironie les rapports entre propriétaires, ouvriers, clergé et familles, tout en interrogeant le mariage, l'éducation et l'autonomie des femmes. Charlotte Brontë, née en 1816 dans le presbytère de Haworth, publia sous le pseudonyme masculin de Currer Bell. Fille d'un pasteur, nourrie de lectures, d'expériences de gouvernante et de l'atmosphère intellectuelle singulière de sa fratrie, elle connaissait intimement l'isolement féminin et les contraintes économiques du travail. Écrit après les disparitions d'Emily et d'Anne Brontë, Shirley porte aussi la marque du deuil, tandis que son intérêt pour les conflits industriels révèle une conscience aiguë de son époque. Ce livre convient au lecteur qui souhaite dépasser le seul roman sentimental et découvrir une œuvre où intrigue amoureuse et critique historique se répondent. Sa richesse réside dans ses personnages féminins, ses dialogues mordants et sa représentation nuancée d'une société en mutation. Malgré quelques développements inégaux, Shirley demeure une lecture particulièrement féconde pour qui s'intéresse au réalisme victorien, aux rapports de classe et à l'émancipation des femmes.
