Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871) as one book, with the poems in their places. The first is a fall down a rabbit-hole into a world run on the logic of card games; the second is a chess problem, played out in a country where you must run to stay where you are. Carroll wrote them for a real child; the jokes, the parodies and the puzzles have never needed her. Its 59 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.
