Both series of the ghost stories — fifteen in all — a Cambridge provost wrote to read aloud to friends at Christmas: the scrapbook that should not have been bought, the whistle blown on a lonely beach, the ash tree outside the window. James was a medievalist by trade and put the horror in the margins of manuscripts and cathedral records, where he worked.
