Complete and unabridged, with 37 full-page plates by Caspar David Friedrich, Peder Severin Krøyer and Oskar Emil Törnå. Two school series of Andersen in one volume: the fir tree, the ugly duckling, the steadfast tin soldier, Thumbelina, the snow queen, and in the second series the wild swans, the red shoes, the little mermaid, the swineherd and the emperor's new clothes. It was edited for American classrooms, with a pronouncing vocabulary of the Danish names at the end. Andersen wrote for adults as much as for children, and the sadness in the fir tree and the mermaid is left where he put it. Thirty-seven plates of northern coast and city, from Caspar David Friedrich to Vilhelm Hammershøi, give the tales the weather and the streets they came from.
