A wounded man crawls to the edge of Juniper Wash with no memory of his name, his past, or who left him for dead.

The only clues he carries are a brass key, three cartridges, and a tarnished deputy's badge. When his horse leads him to Buzzard's Bluff, he learns that his name is Merritt Cole—and that he disappeared after accusing Sheriff Orson Kells of murder and theft.
