Virginia Woolf (1882 - 1941) var en af modernismens vigtigste romanforfattere og litteraturkritikere og en central skikkelse i kunstnermiljøet The Bloomsbury Group, der var toneangivende i mellem 1. og 2. Verdenskrig. Hun voksede op i et intellektuelt miljø i London og blev undervist hjemme af sin far, der var en kendt skikkelse i det litterære miljø. Som 13-årig mistede hun sin mor, hvilket var med til at udløse det første af de psykiske sammenbrud og tilbagevendende depressive perioder, der kom til at præge hendes voksne liv. I 1912 giftede hus sig med Leonard Woolf, en politisk journalist, der også var tilknyttet kredsen af kunstnere og intellektuelle i Bloomsburry-gruppen. Sammen oprettede de forlaget Hogarth Press, der ud over Woolfs egne bøger udgav titler af bl.a. T.S. Eliot, Katherine Mansfield og andre fra parrets omgangskreds. Woolf var også en toneangivende feministisk litteraturkritiker, og hendes essay fra 1929, Sit eget værelse, står stadig som en central tekst om kvindelige kunstneres vilkår.
