De souche normande, le dublinois Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu naît en 1814 et meurt en 1873. Il est un des maîtres de la littérature fantastique anglo-saxonne. Un de ses meilleurs amis est le père d'Oscar Wilde. Son oeuvre annonce le Henry James du Tour d'écrou et de L'image dans le tapis.
