Jerome Klapka Jerome, plus connu sous son nom de plume Jerome K. Jerome, naît dans un foyer aisé. Son père, un pasteur protestant, est alors propriétaire d'une prolifique mine de charbon. Mais l'écroulement de l'affaire paternelle, alors qu'il n'a que deux ans, fait glisser sa famille dans la pauvreté. Détestant l'école, dont il fustigera à de nombreuses reprises les méthodes dans ses livres, Jerome K. Jerome la quitte à quatorze ans. Le jeune homme enchaîne alors les petits boulots. Il est successivement employé de chemins de fer, journaliste, acteur et instituteur.
