En una Inglaterra convencional y puritana, el escándalo y la polémica acompañaron a la novela desde su publicación en Florencia en 1928. Una mujer aristócrata, de vida refinada, casada con un noble lisiado de guerra, inicia una relación sexual con un guardabosques, sin educación, cuya vida se mueve por energías primarias e instintivas. No sólo el tratar el sexo explícitamente supondría una reacción muy negativa por parte de la censura, sino también el hecho de que el autor planteara abiertamente, como en muchas otras de sus obras, el "problema" que supone atreverse a romper las barreras de clase por parte de una mujer.
