Düsseldorf, day one: Holmes, Watson and Detective Superintendent Ernst Gennat drive through a city that behaves strikingly normally – people go to work, children go to school, as if there were no murderer at large. At the first crime scene Holmes counts steps instead of clues, in a café he teaches Gennat that observing does not mean suspecting, and on the big city map a network of routes, habits and crossings takes shape. A witness, a closed street, a detour – and suddenly the crime scenes are no longer starting points but endpoints. Then an entirely ordinary man stops in front of a shop window, looking not at the display but at the people. And on Gennat's desk lands a letter that was never meant for the police.
