Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Robert Fagan, Jean-Baptiste Regnault and Heinrich Füger. Buddhist tales from the Tibetan canon: the birth stories, the parables of the Kanjur, the wise and the foolish, translated from the Tibetan into German by Schiefner and thence into English. Ralston added the notes tracing each story to its Indian original and onward into European folklore. It is the fullest early demonstration that the fables of Europe came a very long way. Sixty plates after Rubens, Géricault and others range from Hercules and Omphale to Thetis dipping the infant Achilles, a fitting company for tales of birth, folly and the gods' dealings with men.
