Om denne bog

A quiet evening is interrupted by a visitor who shouldn’t exist and knows too much to dismiss. What follows is not a chase through time, but a careful walk through inevitability, where every choice feels rehearsed and every hesitation arrives too late. The future on display is calm, organized, and unnervingly polite—and it has room for him, if he’s willing to play his part.

As the night unfolds, certainty becomes dangerous. The machine waiting outside doesn’t promise discovery or heroics. It promises repetition. Every step forward tightens a loop that may have no beginning, only maintenance. What’s at stake isn’t survival or glory, but whether control is possible once a life has already been lived once before.

And It Comes Out Here is a time-travel story that refuses spectacle in favor of precision. Its tension comes from recognition: the creeping realization that knowledge does not grant freedom, and that progress may depend on a theft no one remembers committing. The future doesn’t threaten violence. It offers cooperation—and that may be worse.

Lester Del Rey was one of the most prolific and influential editors and writers in American science fiction, with work appearing in Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy, and If. He was deeply involved in shaping postwar science fiction through both his own stories and his editorial leadership at Del Rey Books. This story reflects his fascination with scientific progress as an inherited burden, and with futures that feel plausible because they are orderly, prosperous, and already finished.
