Cleveland Moffett's Possessed is a compact work of early twentieth-century speculative suspense, joining psychological mystery, occult suggestion, and melodramatic urgency. Its central concern is the unsettling possibility that human identity may be invaded, divided, or mastered by forces beyond ordinary reason. Written in a lucid, journalistic style, the book belongs to the literary moment shaped by spiritualism, psychical research, hypnotism, and emerging modern psychology, when popular fiction often tested the boundary between scientific explanation and supernatural dread. Moffett, an American journalist, editor, and writer of detective and adventure fiction, brought to such material the habits of an investigative reporter: curiosity about evidence, fascination with abnormal experience, and a taste for dramatic revelation. His career in newspapers and magazines, as well as his interest in crime, technology, and social anxieties, helped him transform contemporary debates about the mind and the unseen into accessible narrative form. Possessed reflects an author alert to both public fears and modern intellectual fashions. This book is recommended to readers interested in the intersections of mystery fiction, occult literature, and early psychological narrative. It will especially reward those who enjoy suspense grounded not merely in events, but in questions of will, personality, and the fragile limits of rational certainty.
