George Orwell, egentlig Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950), var britisk forfatter og journalist. Han blev født i Bengalen og opdraget i det britiske kostskolesystem på Eton. Fra 1922-27 var han udstationeret ved det britiske politi i Burma, og disse erfaringer er afspejlet i hans debutroman, BURMA-DAGE fra 1934.
Orwell skrev efterfølgende flere romaner og essays, men slog helt afgørende igennem med sine sidste to, satiriske romaner KAMMERAT NAPOLEON fra 1947 og 1984 fra 1950.
