Marcel Proust föddes 1871 i Paris och avled 1922. Fadern var en förmögen läkare. Marcel Proust fick god utbildning i skolan vid Sorbonne och vistades på somrarna i Illiers ("Combray" i romanerna) nära Chartres. Från barndomen led han svårt av astma och levde, överkänslig som han var, efter moderns död 1905 nästan ständigt i ett ljudisolerat sjukrum i Paris, arbetande på sitt väldiga verk.
