Eines Tages erreicht Holmes ein geheimnisvoller Brief von einer Miß Mary Haiton, die durch die Heirat mit Lord Dungrave, nun das Schloss Dunsinam im schottischen Ashkirk ihr zu Hause nennt. Sie bittet Holmes um Hilfe, da ihr Ehemann, der Lord, sie auf dem Schloss gefangen hält und sie um ihr Leben fürchtet. Sie schreibt weiter, dass es ihr nur mit einer List möglich sein wird, ihrem Gatten zu entfliehen. In den nächsten Tagen wird Sherlock Holmes ein Koffer zugestellt werden, der ein großes Geheimnis bergen wird. Und wahrlich, überraschter hätte Holmes kaum sein können...
