Agnes Grey

At age 19 Anne Brontë left home and worked as a governess for a few years before becoming a writer. Agnes Grey was an 1847 novel based on her experience as a governess. Bronte depicts the precarious position of a governess and how that can affect a young woman. Agnes was the daughter of a minister whose family was in financial difficulty. She has only a few choices for employment. Agnes experiences the difficulty of reining in spoiled children and how wealth can corrupt morals.

Anne Brontë
Anne Brontë (1820 - 1849) var yngre syster till Charlotte Brontë och Emily Brontë. Anne fick liksom sina systrar sin uppfostran och utbildning hemma på prästgården där de växte upp, och i likhet med sina systrar arbetade hon som privatlärare hos olika familjer i York. Under pseudonymen Acton Bell gav hon tillsammans med sina systrar ut diktsamlingen Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell (1846). 1847 gavs hennes första roman, Agnes Grey ut och 1848 kom The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, som det även gjorts en TV-version av som visades på SVT 1998. Agnes Grey är baserad på hennes olyckliga erfarenheter som privatlärare. Anne var den av systrarna som skrev mest kritiskt om dåtidens viktorianska livsstil, något som hon även kritiserades för. Anne dog 1849 i Scarborough, där hon även ligger begravd. Med Främlingen på Wildfelll Hall (2004) gavs hon för första gången ut på svenska.
