The Martians of Wells's invasion are beaten, and Edison builds a fleet to carry the war back to Mars, with Kelvin, Roentgen and the world's governments behind him. Garrett Serviss was an astronomer and a newspaperman, and wrote this in 1898 as an unauthorised sequel for a New York daily. It contains the first space suit, the first asteroid mining and the first ray-gun battle in fiction. Six plates from Church and Bierstadt, whose turbulent clouds and Cotopaxi skies give the Martian campaign the scale it demands.
