Despite Mr. Henry Courtenay's continuously worsening health, his death comes as a surprise to many who knew him. Courtenay's prim manservant shouts, "It was murder!" and begs Dr. Ralph Boyd to discover the perpetrator. Only someone from Courtenay's suburban London home could have entered his room undetected. Could one of the servants be the murderer? Or maybe Courtenay's young wife—or her lovely sister, with whom Boyd has fallen in love? Boyd is coming to realise that secrets lurk at every turn in the Courtenay home, and that, as with all great mysteries, nothing is as plain as it appears.
